Are you guilty of hiding away from the truth?
We all do this from time to time… we opt out of taking a long hard look at our money situation because we are afraid that the truth of the situation may be too difficult to deal with. So we hide our heads in the sand and adopt an attitude of ‘plausible deniability’… in other words, if we don’t know the facts then we don’t have to face the truth.
Have any of you ever tried to hide from your financial situation?
Does the subject feel too ‘big’ to handle and does it make you feel too scared to look it in the eye?
I grew up in Sunny South Africa. Surrounded by a myriad of birds, animals and insects. One of my favourite stories I heard when I was young was about the Ostrich. It’s such a large bird and yet it has the strangest habit of hiding its head behind something small (a rock or a small mound of sand will do) if it feels afraid.
The ostrich believes that if it can’t see the predator, then the predator can’t see it. It can ‘plausibly deny’ the problem even exists.
The Ostrich reminds us to look inward and ask: ‘what am I hiding from’?
On the subject of money…for many years I was channelling my inner ostrich…
I used to put my ‘head in the sand’ whenever the money subject came up. I was terrified of money (what me? handle the finances… are you kidding?)
This is a true story, I would do just about anything to not have to deal with money… But guess what, if you want to build and grow a business, if you want to have any kind of sensible wealth in your life and if you want a business you can be proud of, you have to face your money fears head-on!
One day, I decided that instead of hiding away from the money I would shine a light on it and hold up a mirror to myself to identify the problem!
The energy around this idea for me was thick dark, gooey, stuck energy. Think of stinking swamp water… Yuck…No wonder I didn’t know how much money was coming into the business on a daily basis. I had huge money blocks around the idea.
What would an ostrich do?
Imagine for a minute, our lovely ostrich friend… upon seeing itself in a mirror would it be able to note that he is much bigger than the preditor he is so afraid of?
If he took a look at his really strong legs and gigantic claws and if he stood up to his full 2.7m height, and fluffed up his feathers, would he realise how strong and capable he is to deal with this problem?
Would he realise how he has had the potential to deal with this problem all along?
So what could I do?
I had to face my fears and stop hiding behind the excuses I had invented. When I really took a good hard look at my excuses they were paper thin!
I could crumple them up with one hand. Toss them in the recycling and move on!
The reality is that there are amazing tools to help people manage their money these days. There are great books and podcasts on the subject, there are so many tools out there that can help you to deal with money,

“Plausible deniability is a condition in which a subject can safely and believably deny knowledge of any particular truth that may exist because the subject is deliberately made unaware of said truth so as to benefit or shield the subject from any responsibility associated through the knowledge of such truth.” – source Urban Dictionary
